Get Started Collecting Joy

Getting started is easier than you think. Whether your family is working on brushing teeth, managing screen time, or just getting out the door in the morning, a reward system gives kids a clear reason to try and a reason to keep going. Every family is different, so your system will look different too. Here are some tools to make it yours.

What is a Reward System?

A reward system is a simple, structured way to recognize and celebrate positive behavior. It works because of a well-studied principle called positive reinforcement. When a child does something great and gets recognized for it, the brain reinforces that behavior and makes it easier to repeat. Over time, what starts as a reward becomes a lasting habit.

This approach is backed by decades of research in child development and behavioral science. Teachers, therapists, and pediatricians recommend reward systems as one of the most effective tools for building positive behavior at home.

It's all about showing kids what good looks like, celebrating when they get there, and giving them the confidence to do it again.

  • Step 1

Pick a Behavior to Start With

Start with one specific goal. "Brush your teeth before bed" or "put your shoes away when you get home." Once that becomes a habit, add another. Most families end up tracking 2-3 behaviors at a time, but starting with one keeps it simple.

  • Step 2

    Reward in the Moment

When they do it, hand them a ticket right away. That instant connection between action and reward is what teaches the brain to repeat it. The closer the reward is to the behavior, the stronger the habit.

  • Step 3

    Let Them Cash In

Once they've saved enough tickets, they trade them for a token or a trip to the treasure box. They decide when to spend and when to save. It teaches patience, goal-setting, and the value of working toward something they actually want.

That's it. The magic is in the consistency.

Real-Life Examples

Every family is different. Here are a few ways real parents use the system at home. Progress over perfection.

  • Brushing Teeth

Brush your teeth twice a day. Each time you brush, you earn a ticket. 10 tickets earns a token.

  • Morning Routine

Get dressed, eat breakfast, and have your backpack ready by 7:30. Hit all three? That's a ticket. Great for kids who need a little motivation to get moving.

  • Screen Time

Turn off the iPad when the timer goes off without a meltdown. That earns a ticket. Teaches kids to self-regulate and gives them something positive to focus on.

  • Being Kind

Caught sharing, helping, or using kind words? Surprise ticket. Works best when they don't see it coming. Reinforces the behavior without making it feel like a transaction.

  • School Drop-Off

Had a brave, calm drop-off? That's a ticket waiting when you get home. For kids who struggle with separation, knowing there's something positive on the other side makes a real difference.

  • Getting Started

Pick one behavior to focus on. Be specific. "Brush your teeth before bed" is better than "be good." One clear goal gives your child something they can actually aim for.

Tell them what they'll earn and when. "Every time you brush your teeth, you get a ticket." Keep it simple and give the reward right away so they connect what they did with what they earned.

Set the rules. How many tickets for a treasure? How many for a token? Write it down, put it on the fridge, make it visible. Kids do better when they know exactly what they're working toward.

Start easy. In the first few days, make rewards easy to earn so your child feels successful. Once they've got it, you can gradually raise the bar.

Stay consistent. Celebrate effort, not perfection. Show up every day and they will too.

    Helpful Tips

Put the ticket bank somewhere visible so kids can watch their progress grow.

Let them pick their own stickers to decorate it.

Get them involved in choosing treasures.

The more ownership they feel, the more invested they'll be.
